Liberation Museum (Bevrijdingsmuseum) Zeeland takes you through the eventful years in the province of Zeeland during World War II. The ‘Battle of the Scheldt’ is the central thread of this story. The fierce battle fought in the autumn of 1944 between the allied and German troops for command over the Western Scheldt, the main waterway to the already liberated port of Antwerp. A battle that is often forgotten, despite its crucial significance for the ensuing liberation of Western Europe.

You will make a journey through history. From the rise of fascism and Nazism to the outbreak of World War II. From invading German troops to the persecution of Jews, the resistance and the liberation. You will read personal stories and discover silent witnesses of the war on Zeelandic soil. You will find them in de museum’s rooms, but also outside, in Liberation Park Zeeland, the park surrounding the museum.

During your tour, you will see the results of military violence, both among the troops and among civilians. Their misery, pain, fear, and losses can still be felt through the many pictures and the testimonies you can read and listen to here. You will also learn about the war stories of merchant sailors and the Dutch troops that were sent to the Dutch East Indies after the war.

This collection of stories together from the foundation of Liberation Museum Zeeland. It is a place for contemplation. A place to learn from the past for a peaceful future. Because the lessons taught by World War II are still relevant today. The museum also gives room to the Roosevelt Experience, based on the Four Freedoms phrased by the US president in 1941. They tie in with the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Therefore, the Liberation Museum Zeeland is a symbol of the awareness that freedom is never a given.
