The Second World War began with the invasion of Poland in September 1939. The country was attacked and occupied by both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Both occupying powers immediately established ruthless regimes that were responsible for the deaths of countless Polish citizens and especially Polish Jews. Nominally, Poland ended the war as one of the victors. In reality, as a result of the war, Poland lost its independence, half of its territory and its freedom.
